A novel by American author Mailer, published in 1964 (revised in 1965). Using the form of a popular crime novel, it depicts the struggles of an intellectual attempting to liberate himself from the American system, and breaks new ground in its style, which goes beyond external realism and conveys the dynamism of fundamental life force. Rojak, a former congressman traumatized by his war experiences, impulsively strangles his haughty wife Deborah, who refuses to have sex with him. After evading police questioning and the sinister threats of Deborah's father, a political mastermind, he awakens to his primitive inner self through pure love with Cherry, a singer he meets in the New York underworld, and after Cherry's death, he leaves the corrupt civilized world and travels to the jungles of Central America.
