Indian Studies - Indian Studies (English spelling)

A general term for academic studies that study Indian culture, religion, history, and other cultural artifacts in general. Along with Sinology, it forms a branch of Oriental Studies. In this case, India refers to the region known as the Indian subcontinent, which includes present-day India (Bharat). Sometimes it refers to the Indian cultural sphere, which extends to Myanmar, Tibet, Sri Lanka, etc. Indology or Indic Studies is primarily used for the study of ancient and medieval India, while the term Indian Studies is sometimes used to refer to the study of modern and contemporary India, which became popular mainly in the United States after World War II, but it is difficult to draw a clear line between the two.

インドの文化，宗教，歴史などの文物一般を研究の対象とする学問の総称。シナ(中国)学などとともに東洋学の一部門を形成している。この場合のインドは，現在のインド(バーラト)を含む〈インド亜大陸〉と呼ばれる地域を指す。ときにはミャンマー，チベット，スリランカ等におよぶインド文化圏を意味することもある。インドロジーあるいはインディック･スタディーズIndic Studiesは，主として古代･中世のインド研究に用いられ，第2次大戦後，アメリカを中心に盛んになった近･現代インド研究に対してはインディアン･スタディーズIndian Studiesという語が用いられる場合があるが，明確な線は引き難い。
