Châtelperronian culture

Japanese: シャテルペロン文化 - シャテルペロンぶんか（英語表記）Châtelperronian culture

A culture that flourished in the early Late Paleolithic, mainly in southwestern France. It is included in the Aurignacian culture in the broad sense. It is characterized by wide knife-shaped stone tools. While retaining strong traces of Middle Paleolithic traditions, it also has the characteristics of stone tools from the Late Paleolithic. Traditionally in France, this culture has been considered the Lower Périgord culture, and it has been argued that it was continuous with the Gravett culture, which was considered the Upper Périgord culture, but today this is viewed with considerable doubt.

フランス南西部を中心に後期旧石器時代初頭に栄えた文化。広義のオーリニャック文化に含まれる。幅広のナイフ形石器が特徴とされている。中期旧石器時代的な伝統を色濃く残しながら，後期旧石器時代の石器群の諸特徴を兼ねそなえている。従来フランスでは，この文化を下部ペリゴール文化とし，上部ペリゴール文化とされたグラベット文化との連続性が唱えられたこともあったが，今日では，かなり疑問視されている。
