Cotton grass - Cotton grass

Japanese:
Cotton grass - Cotton grass

A perennial plant of the Cyperaceae family (APG classification: Cyperaceae). It has a short rhizome and grows densely in clumps to form large clumps. It is 20-40 cm tall. In May-June, it produces gray-black spikelets about 2 cm long at the top of the stem. After flowering, the perianth segments grow and become fluffy, enveloping the spikelets. The name comes from the fact that the spikelets resemble cotton. It grows in marshes and is distributed in the high mountains of Honshu from the Chubu region northwards, Hokkaido, Northeast Asia, Siberia, Europe, and North America. It is often confused with Sedge Carex japonica, but it can be distinguished from Cotton Grass because Cotton Grass has only one spikelet and grows in clumps without elongating rhizomes.
