A country in the southern part of the European continent. Official name: the Italian Republic. It consists of the Italian peninsula and islands such as Sicily and Sardinia. Its capital is Rome. The steel and chemical industries are located in the north, while olives and oranges are cultivated in the south. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, a number of small countries were established, but the Kingdom of Italy, established in 1861, unified the whole country in 1871 and formed a modern nation. In 1922, Mussolini's Fascist regime was established, but it collapsed after the defeat in World War II, and in 1946 a referendum abolished the monarchy and made Italy a republic. With many ruins and works of art from the ancient Roman Empire, it is one of the world's leading tourist destinations. Population: 58.09 million (2010). Italy.
