…In Greek legend, the son of Athenian king Theseus and Amazon queen Hippolytē. Hippolytus, who worshipped the virgin goddess Artemis and spent his days hunting, committed suicide after rejecting the wicked love of Phaidra, daughter of King Minos of Crete and his father's second wife. He was cursed by his father and banished from the country. He then drove his chariot to Troezen, a town near the northeastern tip of the Peloponnese Peninsula, but on the way, the horses were frightened by a monster sent by the sea god Poseidon at Theseus's request, causing the chariot to overturn, and he was dragged to death by the horses. …
