These are three books published by the mid-Edo period Confucian scholar Oka Hakukome and his disciple Sawada Issai, who added kunden and side notes to Chinese baichu short stories. Hakukome's "Shosetsu Seigen" (4 volumes, 4 books, 1743) contains four stories from "Xingshi Hengyan" (Xing World Constant Words) written at the end of the Ming Dynasty, "Shosetsu Kigen" (5 volumes, 5 books, 1753) contains five stories from "Konko Kikan" and other works, and Issai's "Shosetsu Suigen" (5 volumes, 5 books, 1758) also contains five stories from "Konko Kikan" and "Keisei Tongyan". Sawada Issai (1701-82) was the owner of the Kyoto bookshop Fugetsudo, and in addition to studying Confucianism, he was also well versed in Japanese classics and had a wide circle of friends.
