A passerine bird of the family Paridae (illustration). Total length is about 14 cm. The head and throat are black, and the forehead, cheeks, and back of the head are light brown. The back and tail are blue-gray, and the chest and abdomen are chestnut brown. It is found only in Japan, the southern part of the Korean Peninsula, and Taiwan. It lives in dense evergreen broadleaf forests and deciduous broadleaf forests from the plains to the mountains, and is often seen in the same places throughout the year, but in autumn and winter, some drift to lighter forests and mixed forests on the plains. It feeds mainly on the branches and leaves of tall trees, and its staple diet is insects. However, in the season when the linden tree and chestnuts ripen, it also eats them, and stores the surplus in a hiding place.
