Sakuragai (cherry shell) - Nitidotellina nitidula
A bivalve mollusca of the family Daygastropoda (illustration). The shell is 3 cm long, 1.8 cm high, and 0.6 cm wide, and is elongated oval. It is flat and thin, rounded at the front and slightly cut at the back. It is translucent and shiny, pale pink to pink-red in color, slightly darker at the rear end, and has two pale-colored bands extending from the apex to the rear and below. Occasionally, individuals are white. The apex of the shell is slightly lower and shifted slightly backward, and there is a black-brown ligament connecting the two shells. It is widely distributed from southern Hokkaido to Kyushu, the Korean Peninsula, and the coast of China, and lives on fine sandy bottoms from the intertidal zone to a depth of about 20 m.

ニッコウガイ科の二枚貝(イラスト)。殻の長さ3cm,高さ1.8cm,幅0.6cmで,横長の楕円形。扁平で薄く,前方はまるく,後方は多少切ったようになる。半透明で光沢があり,淡桃色から桃赤色で後端部は多少濃く,殻頂から後下方へ2本の淡色帯がでる。ときに白色の個体もある。殻頂は多少後方に寄って低く,その後に黒褐色の両殻を結ぶ靱帯がある。北海道南部から九州,朝鮮半島,中国沿岸に広く分布し,潮間帯より水深20mくらいまでの細砂底にすむ。
