Wakamatsu Wakadayu
Born: 1874. Kumagai
[Died] 1948
A narrator of sekkyobushi. His real name was Matsuzaki Daisuke. He was a disciple of Satsuma (Wakamatsu) Tatsutayu. After working as Yoshitayu and Sakitayu, he took the name Wakamatsu Wakadayu in 1902. In 1908, he appeared at the Bionkai, reciting the Abandoned Child section of "Ko Atsumori Ichidaiki," and raising the artistic status of sekkyobushi. Renowned for his beautiful voice, he made a great contribution by revising sekkyobushi, which had been preserved in small numbers in Saitama, Tama, Hachioji, and other areas, into a more modern and refined style, and bringing it into the entertainment world. In 1946, he took the name Musashi Daijo, and handed the name Wakadayu to Jinko Hiroshi. His signature pieces are "Karigaya," "Kumagaya Renshobo," and "Kanjincho."
