Six volumes of ancient and modern waka poetry

A collection of waka poems selected by subject. Also known as Kokin Rokujo for short. The editor and date of its creation are unknown. Some say it was compiled by Prince Kaneakira or Minamoto no Shitago. It is said to have been created during the Jōgen and Tengen eras (976-983). It contains about 4,500 poems from the Manyoshu to the Kokinshu and Gosenshu. The four categories of celestial phenomena, earthly phenomena, human affairs, and plants and animals are further divided into 516 topics, and example poems are categorized and arranged under each topic. Like later haiku seasonal almanac, the example poems are listed under classified topics, and because of its composition method, it has been called a guide for composing poetry since ancient times. From the start, waka poetry in the Heian period had developed as a language in which the words in poetry evoked certain associations, for example, "firefly" means fire, and "Yoshino" means cherry blossoms or snow. It is not hard to imagine that people learned how to compose poetry through these words, using these guidebooks as a basis.

和歌の類題別私撰(しせん)集。略して『古今六帖』とも。編者・成立年代未詳。兼明(かねあきら)親王、源順(したごう)の編とする説もある。貞元(じょうげん)・天元(てんげん)年間（976～983）の成立といわれる。『万葉集』から『古今集』『後撰集(ごせんしゅう)』のころまでの歌約4500首を収める。天象、地儀、人事、動植物の4項目を、さらに516題に細分し、それぞれの題にその例歌を分類配列している。後世の俳諧(はいかい)歳時記のように、分類された題のもとにその例歌を掲げているのであり、その構成法などから、古来、作歌のための手引書といわれてきた。もとより平安時代の和歌は、たとえば「蛍」といえば火、「吉野」といえば桜か雪などというように、歌のことばが一定の連想作用を促すことばとして発達していた。人々がこうした手引書をもとに、歌ことばを通して作歌法を学んだらしいことは想像にかたくない。
