Yoritsune Shoni

Japanese:
Yoritsune Shoni

A military commander during the Northern and Southern Courts period. Son of Sadatsune. Posthumous name Baikei Hontsu. Shugo of Chikuzen, Buzen, Higo, and Tsushima during the early Northern and Southern Courts period. Dazai no Daini. In 1333 (Genko 3/Shokei 2), together with his father, he attacked Chinzei Tandai Hojo Hidetoki at Meinohama in Chikuzen (Fukuoka City) and forced him to commit suicide. When Ashikaga Takauji went west, he welcomed him to Akamagaseki (Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture), and also led the Ashikaga army to victory at the Battle of Tatarahama (Fukuoka City). Yorinari then accompanied Takauji to the east, where he distinguished himself in the Battle of Minatogawa (Kobe City), where the Ashikaga forces defeated Kusunoki Masashige, and contributed greatly to the establishment of the Muromachi Shogunate. After returning to Japan, Yorinari accompanied Ashikaga Tadafuyu, who entered Kyushu during the Kanno Disturbance, in an attempt to solidify his foothold in northern Kyushu by opposing Isshiki Noriuji (whose posthumous name was Doyu), who supported the Shogunate. After Tadafuyu left, Yorinari resumed his role on the Shogunate's side, and in 1659 (Shohei 14, Enbun 4) he fought Prince Kaneyoshi, Kikuchi Takemitsu, and others in the Battle of Chikugogawa, where he was defeated and retreated to Dazaifu. After this, he handed over the family headship to Fuyusuke and spent his later years in Kyoto.
