They are also called Lombards. This term refers to people from the Lombardy region of northern Italy, but in Western Europe from the 12th century onwards, it was used to refer to merchants and financiers from northern Italy. Like the Cahors people from the small city of Cahors in southern France, they were considered synonymous with usury. The German word Lombardgeschäft, which refers to loans secured by movable property, is a vestige of this. Some were from Lombardy, such as Piacenza and Milan, but it is said that most were from Piedmont, such as Asti, and Tuscany, such as Siena, Lucca and Florence.
