Dezfūl (English spelling)

Japanese: デズフール（英語表記）Dezfūl

A city in Khuzestan Province in southwestern Iran. It is located 220 km north of Abadan, on the left bank of the Dez River, near the southern foot of the Zagros Mountains, at an altitude of 143 m. The city's name means "Bridge of Dez" and comes from an imposing bridge 410 m long that is said to have been built by Shapur II of the Sassanid Empire in the 4th century. It is the main winter market for nomads in Lorestan Province to the north, and is connected to the province and Ahbaz by road. There is a station on the Trans-Iranian Railway on the opposite bank of the Dez River, and an airport. The Great Dez Dam, 32 km upstream, is used for electricity generation and irrigation. Population: 181,309 (1991).
