The capital of the state of Mérida in northwestern Venezuela. Located in the central part of the Sierra de Mérida, on a broad river terrace of the Chama River, at an altitude of about 1,640m. Although it is at a low latitude, its high altitude makes for a pleasant climate, with an average annual temperature of 18°C. Founded in 1558. Although it has suffered frequent earthquake damage and its high altitude has hindered its development, it has long been a religious and educational center, with a cathedral, a monastery, and the University of the Andes (1785) in the city. Since the mid-1930s, roads have been built to the northeast to the capital Caracas, the northwest to the Maracaibo lowlands, and the south to the Llanos, and it has become a commercial and industrial center for the surrounding area, distributing coffee, sugarcane, wheat, and producing textiles, tobacco, string, vegetable oil, and furniture. Other specialty products include candied fruit and ruanas (woolen cloaks like ponchos). There are many 4,000m-class high peaks in the area, including Mount Espejo (4,836m), which can be reached by a 12km cable car. Skiing and mountain climbing are also popular, making the city a popular tourist destination. Population: 167,992 (1990). Merida |
