Died July 29, 1780. French architect, Paris. The most outstanding architect of the 18th century who introduced classical architecture to France. He studied architecture at the French Academy in Lyon and Rome, and later traveled to various parts of Asia Minor to study classical architecture. After returning to France, he designed the Theatre de Lyon and the Hôtel Diaux, which earned him fame. In 1755, he won a design competition to design the Basilica of Sainte-Geneviève (now the Panthéon) in Paris. Construction on this building began in 1764 and was completed after his death. In 1757, he became the king's chief architect and was involved in the construction of the Louvre. Other buildings he designed include the University of Law in Paris (1772), which faces the Panthéon Square, and Masson Hospital in Lyon.

フランスの建築家。フランスに古典主義建築を導入した 18世紀の最もすぐれた建築家。リヨンならびにローマのフランス・アカデミーで建築を学び，のち小アジア各地を旅行して古典建築を研究。帰国後リヨン劇場およびオテル・ディオーを設計して名声を博した。 1755年パリのサント・ジュヌビエーブ聖堂 (現パンテオン) 設計の懸賞募集に入賞。この建築は 64年に起工し，彼の死後完成した。 57年国王の主任建築家となり，ルーブル宮の造営にたずさわった。上記のほか彼の設計に成った建物ではパンテオン広場に面するパリの法科大学 (1772) ，リヨンのマッソン病院などがある。
