Born: July 22, 1713 Irancy Died July 29, 1780. French architect, Paris. The most outstanding architect of the 18th century who introduced classical architecture to France. He studied architecture at the French Academy in Lyon and Rome, and later traveled to various parts of Asia Minor to study classical architecture. After returning to France, he designed the Theatre de Lyon and the Hôtel Diaux, which earned him fame. In 1755, he won a design competition to design the Basilica of Sainte-Geneviève (now the Panthéon) in Paris. Construction on this building began in 1764 and was completed after his death. In 1757, he became the king's chief architect and was involved in the construction of the Louvre. Other buildings he designed include the University of Law in Paris (1772), which faces the Panthéon Square, and Masson Hospital in Lyon.
