[Died] May 16, 2013. Borrelau Swiss physicist. He received his master's degree in 1955 and his doctorate in 1960 from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. He then spent two years as a postdoctoral researcher on superconductivity at Rutgers University in the United States. In 1963 he returned to Zurich and took a position at the IBM Research Laboratory in Rüschlikon, where he worked until 1997. During this time, Gerd Binnig joined the lab in 1978, and together they began building instruments to study the local conductivity of conductors and semiconductors. Their first sample, gold, produced an image of the atomic structure of the surface. This instrument, which could clearly identify individual atoms, came to be called the scanning tunneling microscope (STM), and opened a new era in surface science and nanotechnology. In 1986, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics together with Binnig and Ernst AF Ruska.
