A lake in the central west of Scotland, on the border between the counties of Strathclyde and Central. It is a long, narrow lake stretching from north to south, 39 km long and 1-8 km wide, with an area of 71 km2, making it the largest in Great Britain. The lake surface is 8.2 m above sea level and 190 m deep at its deepest. It is surrounded by high mountains, including Ben Lomond (973 m) on the east coast, and the lake water mainly flows in from the west and north coasts and discharges into the Firth of Clyde via the River Leven in the south. The lake's wider surface in the south is dotted with about 30 islands, including an ancient castle. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
