A term in Japanese music. (1) In Noh, it is a relatively fast-paced musical accompaniment inserted into a piece, played on the flute, small drum, and large drum, and has varying tempos. The shite can be the spirit of a warrior who has fallen into the world of asura, as in "Yashima" and "Tsunemasa," or a madwoman, as in "Mii-dera" and "Sumida-gawa." The former is said to represent the fighting that takes place in the world of asura, while the latter is said to represent an unstable mental state. In some Noh plays, such as "Utou," there is a special performance in which the actor captures a bird. In some schools, it can also be used for other performances.
