Mori Ogai

Mori Ogai
1862-1922
A literary figure and military doctor in the Meiji and Taisho periods. His real name was Hayashitaro, and he is as great a writer as Natsume Soseki. He was born in Tsuwano, Iwami (Shimane Prefecture). After graduating from the University of Tokyo's Faculty of Medicine, he became a military doctor and studied abroad in Germany. After returning to Japan, he wrote and translated works such as "Dancing Girl" and "Improvised Poet," and was active in introducing and promoting European literature. In his later years, he wrote historical novels and biographies in opposition to the naturalistic literature of the late Meiji period. His representative works include "Youth," "Gan," "The Abe Clan," "Oshio Heihachiro," "Takase-bune," and "Shibue Chusai." During this time, he served as the Inspector General of Military Surgeons and then as Director of the Medical Bureau of the Ministry of the Army.

本名は林太郎。石見(島根県)津和野の生まれ。東大医学部卒業後,軍医となりドイツに留学。帰国後『舞姫』『即興詩人』などの創作・翻訳,ヨーロッパ文芸の紹介・啓蒙に活躍した。明治末期自然主義文学に対抗し,晩年は歴史小説・史伝を著した。代表作に『青年』『雁』『阿部一族』『大塩平八郎』『高瀬舟』『渋江抽斎』など。その間,軍医総監を経て陸軍省医務局長をつとめた。
