Paranormal phenomena that cannot be predicted or explained by current scientific knowledge are called psychic phenomena, and this is a position that seeks to interpret and study such phenomena from the perspective of survival after death. Phenomena of this type have been known in various places since ancient times. In Europe in particular, there is a tradition of so-called spiritualism, and it was well known through the writings of Swedenborg, but it did not become the subject of systematic research until the mid-19th century. In 1847, an uneducated young American named Andrew Jackson Davis dictated a large mystical work in a hypnotic trance, and the following year, in 1848, the "Hydesville incident" occurred in a remote village in New York state.

現在の科学知識からは予測も説明も不能な超常的現象を心霊現象と呼ぶが，そうした現象を死後生存の方面から解釈，研究しようとする立場。この種の現象は古来各地で知られている。とくにヨーロッパ諸国では，いわゆる心霊主義spiritualismの伝統があり，スウェーデンボリの著作などを通じてなじみが深かったが，19世紀中葉までは系統的研究の対象とはならなかった。1847年デービスAndrew Jackson Davisというアメリカの無学な一青年が催眠のトランス状態で神秘的大著を口述するという事件があり，翌48年にはニューヨーク州の寒村で〈ハイズビル事件〉が起こる。
