A 19th century French genius magician and inventor. His real name was Jean-Eugène Robert. Born the son of a watchmaker in Blois, he became familiar with precision machinery and later devised revolutionary tricks using mechanical technology. His talent in inventing new clocks and automata was so great that he was praised by Louis-Philippe and the Academy. In 1845, he opened the Robert-Houdin Theater at the Palais Royal, known as "the smallest theater in Paris," and gained popularity throughout the capital. However, after the February Revolution, his popularity fell into decline, and he spent his later years performing abroad.

19世紀フランスの天才的奇術師，発明家。本名ロベールJean‐Eugène Robert。ブロアの時計職人の子として生まれ，精密機械技術に通じてのち，機械技術を用いた画期的な奇術芸を案出した。また，新型時計や自動人形の発明に発揮された才能は，ルイ･フィリップやアカデミーの賞賛を受けるほどであった。1845年，パレ･ロアイヤルに〈パリ一小さい劇場〉と称するロベール･ウーダン劇場を開設して満都の人気を集めながら，二月革命以後は落し，晩年は海外公演のうちに過ごした。
