1805‐71 A 19th century French genius magician and inventor. His real name was Jean-Eugène Robert. Born the son of a watchmaker in Blois, he became familiar with precision machinery and later devised revolutionary tricks using mechanical technology. His talent in inventing new clocks and automata was so great that he was praised by Louis-Philippe and the Academy. In 1845, he opened the Robert-Houdin Theater at the Palais Royal, known as "the smallest theater in Paris," and gained popularity throughout the capital.
