It is one of the basic music education, and it is singing melodies and scales using only vowels or syllables such as scale names (when singing only vowels, it is sometimes called vocalise). In the 18th century, Italy and France perfected the use of specific syllables for singing practice as a vocal education system. This came to be called solfege, and many exercises were created. In the 19th century, mainly in France, basic music education that added other subjects to this narrow definition of solfege was developed for music students, and the whole of it came to be called solfege. This broad definition of solfege aims to acquire perfect music reading skills and accurate expression. The contents include music theory (music theory, harmonic analysis, etc.), ear training (discrimination of pitch, chords, note values, etc. and notation), solfege (sight-singing music, comprehensive study of intervals and phrasing, etc.), and rhythm practice using various methods.

音楽の基礎教育の一つで、旋律や音階などを母音のみ、あるいは階名などのシラブルで歌うこと（母音のみで歌う場合には、とくにボカリーズとよぶこともある）。18世紀にイタリア、フランスで声楽の教育体系として、特定のシラブルを歌唱練習に用いることが完成された。これがソルフェージュとよばれるようになり、多くの練習曲がつくられた。19世紀にはフランスを中心として、この狭義のソルフェージュに他の科目を加えた音楽の基礎教育が音楽学生を対象に整備され、その全体をソルフェージュと総称するようになった。この広義のソルフェージュは、完全な読譜力と正確な表現力の習得を目的としている。内容としては、楽典（音楽理論、和声分析など）、聴音（音高や和音、音価などの識別とその記譜）、ソルフェージュ（楽譜の視唱、音程やフレージングなどの総合的な学習）、さまざまな方法によるリズム練習などがある。
