[Born] June 1609, Dru [Died] June 28, 1650. Dru French playwright. He was the first playwright to be inspired by Spanish classical drama, and wrote many Baroque-style works. In 1628, he made his debut with the tragicomedy L'Hypocondriaque, and thereafter wrote many works for the Théâtre de Bourgogne. His work Hercule mourant (1634), which took its subject from Seneca, was the first work worthy of the name of a classical tragedy that conformed to the rules. He was under the patronage of Richelieu, but was favorable to P. Corneille during the Le Cid controversy. His representative works include the religious tragedy Le Véritable Saint-Genest (47), the political tragedy Venceslas (48), and Cosroès (49).
