Lotman - Lotman (English notation) Юрий Михайлович Лотман／Yuriy Mihaylovich Lotman

A Russian literary scholar and semiotician. Professor at the University of Tartu since 1963. In the 1950s, he mainly studied the literary history of the 18th and 19th centuries, including those of Radishchev and Karamzin, but from the 1960s onwards, he was active as one of the leading figures in the "Moscow-Tartu School" of semiotics. At first, he focused on semiotic studies of literature, such as "Lectures on Structural Poetics" (1964), but also dealt with film, theater and art. However, from around 1970, he shifted his focus to "cultural semiotics," which focuses on the whole entity of culture and also studies individual symbol systems such as literature and film within that whole entity, and "historical semiotics," which aims to reexamine Russian history.

ロシアの文学研究者、記号学者。1963年以来タルトゥ大学教授。1950年代にはラジーシチェフ、カラムジンらをはじめとする18、19世紀の文学史をおもな研究対象としていたが、1960年代以降はなによりもまず記号学の「モスクワ・タルトゥ派」の重鎮の一人として活躍した。当初は『構造詩学講義』（1964）をはじめ、文学を記号学的に研究したものを中心にしつつ、映画、演劇、美術なども扱っていた。しかし1970年前後からは、文化という統一体を問題とし、またその統一体のなかで文学や映画など個々の記号体系をも研究していこうとする「文化の記号学」や、ロシア史の再検討を主目的とする「歴史記号論」に比重を移していった。
