The river flows slowly, 600 m wide, until it joins with the Niyang (Gyamuda) River. From there, the river becomes rapid and narrows, forming a deep gorge and making a hairpin detour around Mount Namcha Barwa (7,762 m), before turning south and penetrating the Himalayas.
