The capital of Papua New Guinea. It is located on the southeast coast of the island of New Guinea and forms the National Capital District. Its population was 193,000 (1990). In 1873, John Moresby discovered and named the port. It was a quiet port town, but after 1945 it developed rapidly as an administrative center and spread into the neighboring hills. Because it is in the shadow of the Owen Stanley Ranges, it is the region with the driest rainfall in the country (average annual rainfall is 1,195 mm). Almost all modern goods are available, the city is a place of many different races, and the government district in the east is lined with buildings.
