A former town in Shitsuki District, southwest Okayama Prefecture. The main settlement is Yoshii, a village at the mouth of the Shigi River. Rice, livestock, and flowers, burdock, and spinach are cultivated. Limestone is also mined. 岡山県南西部，後月(しつき)郡の旧町。中心集落は鴫(しぎ)川の渓口集落吉井。米作，畜産，花卉(かき)・ゴボウ・ホウレンソウの栽培を行う。石灰石も採掘。2005年３月小田郡美星町と井原市へ編入。80.71km2。6109人（2003）。
