Dharmakīrti (English spelling)

Japanese: ダルマキールティ（英語表記）Dharmakīrti

An Indian Buddhist logician around 650. In the Chinese translation of Buddhist scriptures, he is called Hossho. He refined the logical thought of Dignāga, the founder of Indian Buddhist logic. He argued that each moment exists from the perspective of truth, and that although we assume a stream of consciousness as a succession of moments and recognize the continuous existence of individuals, this is nothing more than something conceived by thought. His works include Nyāya-bindu (Essay on Logic) and Pramāṇavārttika (Criticism of Knowledge).

650年頃のインドの仏教論理学者。漢訳仏典では法称 (ほっしょう) 。インドの仏教論理学の確立者ディグナーガ (陳那) の論理思想を一層細密なものとした。彼は各瞬間が真理の面からみると存在するものであるとし，われわれは各瞬間の連続として意識の流れを想定し，個人の連続的存在を認めているが，それは思惟によって構想されたものにほかならないとした。著書に『論理学小論』 Nyāya-bindu，『知識批判書』 Pramāṇavārttikaなどがある。
