A former town in Nitta County, located on the alluvial fan of the Watarase River in southeastern Gunma Prefecture. It was once a wilderness called Kasakake-no, but in 1672, Okanobori Kageyoshi, a provincial official, diverted water from the Watarase River and developed the area. Agriculture is the main industry, with vegetable cultivation and dairy farming thriving. Pickled takuan (pickled radish) is a specialty. The Tobu Kiryu Line runs through the east of the town. Yabutsuka Onsen and the Japan Snake Center are both located here. In March 2005, Ojima Town, Nitta Town, and Nitta County were incorporated into Ota City. Area: 20.97 km2 . Population: 18,745 (2003).
