A generation of Americans who experienced the devastation of World War I directly and indirectly, and lost sight of their way of life, or were lost, despairing of established ideals and values. It is translated as the "Lost Generation." This name, derived from a quote by G. Stein (You are all a lost generation) quoted in the epigraph of Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises (1926), directly refers to the nihilistic, hedonistic bohemians who haunted Paris in the 1920s, as depicted in the novel, and who bore the vivid scars of the war. (You are all a lost generation)に由来するこの呼び名は,直接的にはこの小説で描かれているように,大戦の生々しい傷痕をかかえて1920年代のパリにたむろした虚無的,享楽的なボヘミアンたちを指す。
