〘Noun〙① Under the ritsuryo system of post stations, horses used for riding by post messengers at post stations set up every 30 ri on official roads. Also, horses provided at post stations for use by general travelers. Hayuma. *Ryo Gikai (718) Stables: " Only one post horse is placed on each road. Twenty on the main roads, ten on the middle roads, and five on the minor roads." *Nippo Jisho (1603-04) "Yeqiba (エキバ) . Umayajini aru uma" [Records of the Grand Historian - Records of Zheng's Day]② One of the names of gods assigned to the nine stars. A day said to be good for long journeys, taking up a post, relocating, as well as for medical treatment and prayers. The days on which this god is on duty are the days of the monkey in January, May, and September, the snake in February, June, and October , the tiger in March, July, and November, and the boar in April, August, and December . [Eloquence] There is an article in the Kojiki-Chu that says that a "station messenger " was sent as a tribute when Yamato Takeru died, so did ① exist before the Taiho Code? Stations fell into decline with the collapse of the Ritsuryo system, and after the Kamakura period, when inns developed instead, the term came to be used not only for official inns, but also for horses at private inns.

Hayuma [station horse]

〘Noun〙 (a variation of "Hayauma") A horse placed at each station on the roads for government officials and travelers on official business during the Nara period. ※Man'yoshu (late 8th century) 18.4110 "The bells were hung at the palace where Saburo -ko had been praying, and the waves of the sea came down, and the village was filled with people."

〘名〙① 令制の駅制で、官道三〇里ごとに設置された駅家に備えて駅使の乗用に使う馬。また、宿駅に備えて、一般の旅客の用に供する馬。はゆま。※令義解(718)厩牧「凡諸道置駅馬。大路廿疋。中路十匹。小路五匹」※日葡辞書(1603‐04)「Yeqiba(エキバ)。ウマヤヂニ アル ウマ」 〔史記‐鄭当時伝〕② 九星にあてた神の名の一つ。遠行、赴任、移居、また、医療、祈福によいという日。正月・五月・九月は申(さる)の日、二月・六月・一〇月は巳(み)の日、三月・七月・一一月は寅(とら)の日、四月・八月・一二月は亥(い)の日が、この神の当番日にあたるという。[語誌]「古事記‐中」に倭建命の死に際して「駅使(はゆまづかい)」を貢上したとの記事があり、大宝令以前にも①は存在したか。駅家が律令制の崩壊とともに衰微し、鎌倉時代以降、代わって宿が発達すると、官制に限らず、民間の宿駅の馬についても用いられるようになった。

はゆま【駅馬】

〘名〙 (「はやうま」の変化した語) 奈良時代の駅制で、役人や公用の旅行者のために、諸道の各駅に置かれた馬。※万葉(8C後)一八・四一一〇「左夫流子が斎(いつ)きし殿に鈴掛けぬ波由麻(ハユマ)下れり里もとどろに」
