〘名〙① 令制の駅制で、官道三〇里ごとに設置された駅家に備えて駅使の乗用に使う馬。また、宿駅に備えて、一般の旅客の用に供する馬。はゆま。※令義解（718）厩牧「凡諸道置_二駅馬_一。大路廿疋。中路十匹。小路五匹」※日葡辞書（1603‐04）「Yeqiba(エキバ)。ウマヤヂニアルウマ」〔史記‐鄭当時伝〕② 九星にあてた神の名の一つ。遠行、赴任、移居、また、医療、祈福によいという日。正月・五月・九月は申(さる)の日、二月・六月・一〇月は巳(み)の日、三月・七月・一一月は寅(とら)の日、四月・八月・一二月は亥(い)の日が、この神の当番日にあたるという。[語誌]「古事記‐中」に倭建命の死に際して「駅使(はゆまづかい)」を貢上したとの記事があり、大宝令以前にも①は存在したか。駅家が律令制の崩壊とともに衰微し、鎌倉時代以降、代わって宿が発達すると、官制に限らず、民間の宿駅の馬についても用いられるようになった。
