The Russian alphabet consists of 33 letters. There were two original Slavic alphabets: the Glagolitic alphabet, which was established in the 9th century based on lowercase Greek letters, and the Cyrillic alphabet, which was established around the end of the 9th century based on uppercase Greek letters. The Russian alphabet originated from the latter, the Cyrillic alphabet, and has undergone several reforms throughout history to reach its present form, but it is now also used for the languages of many non-Slavic peoples in the Russian Federation region, as well as for Mongolian.
