Among the folk tales based on the folk belief that a person's fate is already decided when they are born, those in which a god (birth god) who decides fate at birth appears in the story are collectively called "Questions and Answers with the Birth God." In many stories, someone happens to hear that the birth gods are deciding the fate of a child about to be born, and the people involved try to escape that fate but end up doing so anyway, but there are also stories in which people succeed in changing their fate by providing food to the gods.
