They are a people who formed a nation around the 7th century and developed their own culture. Today, they live in areas ranging from Ladakh in the west, southwestern Gansu Province and western Sichuan Province in the east, the Kunlun Mountains in the north, and the southern foothills of the Himalayas in Nepal, Sikkim, and Bhutan in the south. According to the 1990 census of the People's Republic of China, of the approximately 4.6 million Tibetans (known as the Tibetans in China), 2.2 million live in the Tibet Autonomous Region, and the rest are distributed in Tibetan autonomous prefectures and counties in Qinghai, Sichuan, Gansu, Yunnan, and other provinces. 7世紀ころから一つの国家を形成して独自の文化を育てあげた民族。今日では,西はラダック,東は中国甘粛省南西部,四川省西部,北は崑崙山脈,南はヒマラヤ山脈の南麓ネパール,シッキム,ブータンにまで広がって居住する。中華人民共和国の国勢調査(1990)では,中国国内のチベット族(中国では蔵族と呼ぶ)約460万人のうち,220万人がチベット自治区に住み,残りは青海,四川,甘粛,雲南などの各省のチベット族自治州・自治県に分布している。
