Miocene

Miocene

A geological period that divides the Neogene Period of the Cenozoic Era into two periods. It refers to the period from approximately 23.03 million years ago to 5.333 million years ago. The strata formed during the Miocene are called the Miocene series. The Himalayan Alps experienced the most intense uplift from the middle to late periods. This was accompanied by the eruption of a huge amount of volcanic rocks. The climate experienced a global warm period at the beginning of the Middle Period (around 16.5 million years ago), which was a clear transgression period worldwide (a period of high sea levels when the sea advanced inland). It then cooled. The number of animal species common to the present increased significantly compared to the previous Oligocene, and it can be said that the biological world became modern from this period.
