Guemul deer (English spelling)

Japanese: ゲマルジカ（英語表記）guemal

A mammal of the Cervidae family in the order Artiodactyla. Also known as the Chilean Guemal Deer. A medium-sized deer found in the Andes and Patagonia in southern Chile. Males have Y-shaped antlers that split into two, and both sexes have large, sharp canines in their upper jaws. The antlers have shorter branches that extend forward. Females have no antlers. Body length is 115-160 cm, tail length 10-15 cm. Body color is grayish yellowish brown. They live in small herds of up to eight animals led by a female at altitudes of 3,300-5,000 m. They spend the summer in the highland grasslands and winter in the forests of the valleys.

偶蹄目シカ科の哺乳類。チリゲマルジカともいう。チリ南部のアンデスとパタゴニアに分布する中型のシカ。雄がY字形に二つの枝に分かれた角をもち，雌雄とも上あごに大きく鋭い犬歯をもつのが特徴。枝角は前方にのびる枝のほうが短い。雌には角はない。体長115～160cm，尾長10～15cm。体色は灰色がかった黄褐色。標高3300～5000mの地に，雌が率いる8頭くらいまでの小さな群れをつくってすむ。夏を高地の草原で過ごし，冬は谷間の森林に入る。
