Andree, EW

...It is located on the west bank of the Tigris River, 110 km south of Mosul in northern Iraq. Many famous excavators in the 19th century investigated this site and obtained carvings and cuneiform historical materials, but the first full-scale stratigraphic excavation in Mesopotamia, carried out by German Andrae Ernst Walter Andrae in 1903-14, played an important role in clarifying the structure and history of the city. The city is fan-shaped around the confluence of the Tigris River and a tributary, and is surrounded by a wall. At the key point along the tributary, there is the Temple of Ashur, a ziggurat, an old palace, a temple, the Temple of Ishtar, which has an ancient origin and has been remodeled more than six times, a temple, and a new palace, all built by Shamshi-Adad I (reigned 1813-1781 BC), and further west, there is the ``House of New Year Festivals, Bit Akitu.''
