Iksan [City] - Ekisan (English spelling)

Japanese: 益山[市] - えきざん（英語表記）Iksan

A city in the northern inland area of North Jeolla Province, South Korea. It was renamed Iri City in 1995. Population 329,212 (1995). It is located in the center of the Honam Plain, Korea's granary. It is a key transportation hub where the Honam Line, Gunsan Line, and Jeolla Line branch off, and commerce developed as a distribution center for agricultural products. Currently, the Rural Development Agency and other agricultural-related organizations are concentrated here, and various consumer goods industries such as food and textiles are also thriving. It is the head temple of Won Buddhism (a new sect of Buddhism) and is home to Wonkwang University, which was founded by the city. [Taniura Takao]

韓国，全羅北道北部内陸の都市。裡里市が1995年に改称。人口32万9212(1995)。韓国の穀倉，湖南平野の中心に位置する。湖南線と群山線，全羅線が分岐する交通の要衝にあたり，農産物集散地として商業が発達した。現在，農村振興院ほか農業関係諸機関が集中し，食品，繊維など消費財工業も各種興っている。円仏教(仏教の新宗派)の総本山があり，その設立になる円光大学がある。【谷浦孝雄】
