[Classification]
Peach varieties are classified into various categories. The group of hairy varieties with fine hairs on the fruit is usually called peach ( P. persica var. vulgaris Maxim.) (illustration), the group of hairless varieties is called nectarine (illustration), the group of varieties with disc-shaped fruit is called peento (also called zazen peach) (P. persica var. platycarpa Bailey (English name peento, flat peach) (illustration), and the group of dwarf varieties is called juseito ( P. persica var. densa Makino (English name dwarfed peach). In addition, taking into account the differentiated geographical and ecological characteristics of the cultivars, they are broadly divided into oriental and European types, the former of which are sometimes further divided into North China, South China, and Peanut types, and the latter of which are Persian and Spanish types.
