Year of birth: Year of birth unknown. A powerful military commander of Prince Oama (later Emperor Tenmu) during the Jinshin War (672). Oyori is also written as Oyori or Koyori. He was born in Kakami County, Mino Province (Gifu Prefecture). As Prince Oama's chamberlain, he rushed to Anpachi County, Mino Province when the war broke out, and with the help of Tahonji, who served as the Yubokurei, he mobilized 3,000 soldiers and succeeded in blocking the road to the strategically important site of Fuwa (Fuwa County, Gifu Prefecture). The Oama side soon invaded Omi, but Oyori became their commander and defeated the Omi army, taking Otsu Palace. Prince Otomo committed suicide, and the Omi army was annihilated. At the time of his death, he was awarded the extraordinary rank of Soto Komurasaki (equivalent to the later Junior Third Rank) for his achievements in the Jinshin era. In July of the first year of the Taiho era (701), he was allowed to pass on a quarter of his 120 households to his children, and in the second year of the Reiki era (716), his son Shigamaro was given 10 cho of land, which was later approved as being passed on to his second generation.
