Amika (net-winged midge)

Japanese: アミカ(網蚊) - アミカ(英語表記)net‐winged midge
Amika (net-winged midge)
A general term for insects belonging to the Dipteran order, family Blepharoceridae. Adults resemble crane flies, with long bodies and legs and broad wings. In addition to the usual wing veins, the wings have mesh-like folds. These folds were formed when the wings folded during the pupal stage. The larvae and pupae live attached to rocks in mountain streams with strong currents. The larvae are flattened dorsally and ventrally, consisting of seven segments, and have circular suckers on the midline of the first to sixth abdominal segments. The pupae are oval and flattened. They have a pair of respiratory discs on the dorsal side of the pronotum, and this morphology is one of the characteristics that distinguish the species.
