...This kind of experimental film movement seemed to disappear with the war, but it was revived as "underground film" in the future. The first experimental film in Japan is said to be the production of "Kinecalligraphy" by the Graphic Group including Seiji Otsuji in 1955 (Toshio Matsumoto, "Sketches of Japanese Experimental Films"), but even before that, Japan's first amateur film magazine "Amateur Movies" edited by Masami Nishimura was launched in 1928, and it is thought that there was a prehistory of "experimental film" as amateur film = individual film (see the "small film" entry). Around 1960, the activities of the "Nihon University Film Production Group" including Masao Adachi and Motoharu Jonouchi (independently produced "Clothed Shadow" (1962)), the "Experimental Film Viewing Society", and the "Experimental Film Festival" by the Sogetsu Art Center (completed in June 1958) attracted attention and became the pioneers of the underground film movement. ...
