For example, let's assume that you have 1 million yen in funds and choose company A's stock to purchase advantageous stock from company A, company B, and company C, and six months later the stock prices of each company are 1.3 million yen for company A, 1.5 million yen for company B, and 1.1 million yen for company C. If it had been the best decision, you would have chosen company B's stock. Therefore, the opportunity cost is 1.5 million yen - 1.3 million yen = 200,000 yen. 最善の意思決定の機会を逸したことによる損失のこと。実際に実現した利益 (または原価) と,実際に発生した事象に対して意思決定が最善のものであれば実現したであろう利益 (または原価) との差で表わされる。たとえば 100万円の資金でA社,B社,C社のなかから有利な株を購入する目的でA社の株を選択したものと仮定し,6ヵ月後の各社の株価はA社=130万円,B社=150万円,C社=110万円であるとする。もし最善の意思決定であればB社の株を選んでいたはずである。したがって機会原価は 150万円-130万円=20万円ということになる。
