American composer, conductor, and pianist. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, and raised in New York, he began learning piano in elementary school. In high school, he discovered jazz and formed a band with his friends. After graduating from McGill University and Manns School of Music, he entered the West Academy of Music, where he studied under composers Darius Milhaud and Henry Cowell (1897-1965). From 1950 to 1952, he worked for an Army soldier entertainment agency, and in 1953, he entered the music world as an accompanist for singer Vic Damone (1928-2018), and also composed and arranged music. In 1956, he met lyricist Hal David (1921-2012), and their collaborative song , The Story of My Life , became Marty Robbins' (1925-1982) first hit in 1957. After serving as an accompanist for Marlene Dietrich from 1958 to 1961, he began working with Hull in 1962 to focus on songwriting. They began with songs by Dionne Warwick (1940-), a singer they had nurtured, such as Don't Make Me Over, Man! (1962), Walk on By (1964), and I Say a Little Prayer (1967), which led to a string of hits. He joined the ranks of great composers with his unique style, which showed his own ingenuity in bold key changes, off-beat time signatures, and rhythm and sound. In 1968, he achieved success with the music for the musical Promises, Promises . He then won an Academy Award for Best Original Score for the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), and also won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for the film's theme song Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head and for Arthur 's Theme ( Best That You Can Do ) for the 1981 film Arthur. He married singer and songwriter Carole Bayer Sager (1946-) in 1982 (divorced in 1991). Their co-writings include the aforementioned New York City Serenade and That's What Friends Are For, which won a Grammy Award for Best Original Song in 1986. Other hits include Do You Know the Way to San Jose?, Close to You , and Look of Love .
