French fashion designer. Born in Granville, Normandy. He initially aspired to be a diplomat, but in the early 1930s, he ran an art gallery. He then started out as a fashion designer, working at Robert Piguet and Lucien Lelong. In 1946, with the backing of French textile magnate Marcel Boussac, he went independent and set up shop on Avenue Montaigne. In February 1947, as a reaction to the strict clothing controls imposed during World War II, he introduced the "New Look," a very feminine, long skirt made of plenty of fabric, which instantly took the world by storm. Since then, he has introduced popular designs such as H-line, A-line, and Y-line. He also pioneered the licensing business of using the name haute couture on scarves, socks, and ties, and developed haute couture into a huge business. The shop was taken over by Jean-Franco Ferré from 1989 to 1996, and by John Galliano from 1996.
