Felinae

...This hunting method was very successful, and around 3 million years ago, from the end of the Tertiary Period to the beginning of the Quaternary Period, some of the macaerosids were as large as modern lions. The modern cat subfamily Felinae branched off from the Nimraphiinae in the middle Miocene Epoch, around 15 million years ago, a little later than the macaerosids. The feline hunting method of killing prey by severing their spinal cords was not as efficient as the dagger-like canines of the saber-toothed cat at first, and so it did not thrive.
