A type of radio navigation. Abolished in 1997. Based on the same hyperbolic radio navigation principle as Loran and Decca, eight Omega stations around the world send out radio signals every 10 seconds for about one second. The phase difference between any two of these signals is measured with an Omega receiver, and the ship's position is determined using an Omega chart or table. By using radio waves with long wavelengths (10-14kHz), the effective range is now 5,000-6,000 nautical miles, with an accuracy of about 1 nautical mile, greatly improving performance. It was abolished due to the widespread use of the more accurate Global Positioning System (GPS).
