1862‐1931
Leader of the anti-Italian resistance in Libya. Son of the founder of the Sanusi sect, he studied Islamic studies at the monastery of the Sanusi sect in Jagbub, headed by Muhammad al-Mahdi, who led the anti-Ottoman Turkish movement. He began his anti-Italian resistance in Cyrenaica in 1911, when he served in the Ottoman army's war against Italy. After the Italian occupation of Jagbub in 1926, Mukhtar's resistance took the form of guerilla warfare, and according to records from that time, the Italian army was forced into battle 263 times in 20 months.

リビアの反イタリア抵抗運動の指導者。サヌーシー教団(サヌーシー派)の創設者の子で，反オスマン･トルコ運動を展開するムハンマド･アルマフディー主宰のジャグブーブの教団の修道場で，イスラム諸学を修めた。1911年オスマン帝国軍の対イタリア戦争に従軍したのを手始めに，生れ故郷キレナイカで反イタリア抵抗運動を死ぬまで続けた。26年イタリア軍のジャグブーブ占領以後，ムフタールの抵抗はゲリラ戦の形をとり，当時の記録では20ヵ月間にイタリア軍は263回の戦闘を強いられた。
