1862‐1931 Leader of the anti-Italian resistance in Libya. Son of the founder of the Sanusi sect, he studied Islamic studies at the monastery of the Sanusi sect in Jagbub, headed by Muhammad al-Mahdi, who led the anti-Ottoman Turkish movement. He began his anti-Italian resistance in Cyrenaica in 1911, when he served in the Ottoman army's war against Italy. After the Italian occupation of Jagbub in 1926, Mukhtar's resistance took the form of guerilla warfare, and according to records from that time, the Italian army was forced into battle 263 times in 20 months.
