Microbiologist. Born on March 23, 1873 in Tsumo Village, Mino County, Shimane Prefecture (now Masuda City), he was adopted by Hata Tokuta (1887). In 1891 (Meiji 24), he entered the medical department of the Third High School (now Okayama University Medical School), which was then located in Okayama, and graduated in 1895. After serving in the military, he worked at Okayama Prefectural Hospital (1897), went to Tokyo to become a student of Kitasato Shibasaburo and became an assistant at the Institute for Infectious Diseases (1898), studied in Germany (1907) under Wassermann, and then studied under Ehrlich and Martin Jacoby (1872-1941) before returning to Japan (1910). When the Kitasato Institute was established, he resigned from his official position (1914), and became a professor at Keio University (1920) and vice director of the Kitasato Institute (1931). He was a member of the Imperial Academy (1933). His main research was the discovery, in collaboration with Ehrlich, of Salvarsan (commonly known as No. 606) as a chemotherapy drug that was highly effective against relapsing fever, syphilis, and malaria (1910), and in his later years he received the Asakawa Prize (1934) for his research into deep-penetrating disinfectants. He passed away on November 22, 1938. The Hata Memorial Hall commemorating his achievements is located in Mito-cho, Masuda City.
